Eurodesk recently attended a research symposium in Strasbourg to learn and exchange ideas about how we can help young people, particularly those who face additional barriers, access their social rights.
Experts from a variety of backgrounds presented research on topics as diverse as the extra hurdles for students with disabilities trying to access Erasmus+ programmes, shrinking civic spaces, youth loneliness, living conditions of students relying on food aid and whether technology helps or hinders access for young people with additional needs.
In the ‘Unequal Access to Learning Mobility: Systemic Barriers and the Role of Youth Information for Minority Groups’ session, Eurodesk presented findings from our Youth Info Survey, which was followed by an interesting discussion with participants about their experiences and knowledge.
Access to youth information services is essential for young people. When provided practical, comprehensive information, they are able to take part in mobility opportunities – to study, volunteer or work abroad. It’s been found that these experiences lead to increased confidence and problem-solving skills, professional growth, better language skills and a stronger sense of European identity and active citizenship – among many other benefits.
All young people should have the opportunity to access their rights and take part in these opportunities. It was invaluable to hear from people who have been researching barriers to accessing these rights and what can be done to remove them.
It was an excellent three days with many interesting ideas shared and discussed with academics, EU representatives and youth organisers and workers. We are very thankful to the organisers for putting together this excellent event and providing a forum for a thoughtful exchange of ideas.
